Just went 100 to 0 real quick on the Miata. I didn’t ever foresee the intercooler piping as being an issue so I thought I was almost done with this project and would be able to make the deadline of 10 days from now. Nope. There’s no way to mount the intercooler in a way that will work and I’m totally out of money. Took four hours to go from “fuck yeah let’s finish this project” to “I’m not going to be able to finish this project”.

just bust out an old erector set and connect as many supports as you can.

That sucks, man. That really sucks.

Does it HAVE to be intercooled? I’ve had power steering coolers bigger than the mazdaspeed intercooler.

so just remove the front plastics, to get it all mounted.........
its what all the cool kids are doing anyhow, right???...........

LISTEN SON. YOU AIN’T COME ALL THIS WAY JUST TO QUIT. QUITTIN NOW MEANS GIT’N YER ASS KICKED BY A BUNCH OF INANIMATE PIPING! IF YOU THINK THERE’S EVEN ONE WOMAN IN THE TRI COUNTY AREA THAT THINKS A MAN GITTIN HIS ASS HANDED TO HIM BY SOME PIPING IS SEXY, YOU GOT ANOTHER THING COMIN!!
LISTEN UP SOLDIER!! NOW AIN'T THE TIME 'T TURN TAIL AND RUN!! YOU NEED TO GIT BACK OUT THERE AND SHOW THIS TURBO PROJECT WHO'S BOSS! GIT IN THE SHED, GIT YER SAWZALL AND ZIP TIES, GIT BACK OUT THERE AND GIT HER DONE!!!!!! 11!!1!1!

Can’t do front mount because of my marginal cooling system. Can’t take the bumper off anyways because the studs that hold it on spin freely and are in a position I can’t cut them off.

I need all the help I can get so I can advance the timing a little

What

this
![]() 08/16/2016 at 22:40 |

what about the bumper cover??........... can you get an oxygen torch to the bumper bolts??and just cut off the heads......... air chisel???.... you might have to decide if you want a turbo miata, or a front bumper..........just got to get mean with it.........
![]() 08/16/2016 at 22:55 |

There’s no way to get much more than a wrench on those bolts, and the backside is totally inaccessible.
![]() 08/16/2016 at 22:56 |

I don’t get the connection
![]() 08/16/2016 at 22:57 |

picture might help.........
![]() 08/16/2016 at 23:01 |

you can build ANYTHING with an erector-set.................

Hood mount?
![]() 08/16/2016 at 23:18 |

What kind of kit are you putting in? I’m close to pulling the trigger on a package for my NB.
![]() 08/16/2016 at 23:39 |
|
The hell is a “kit”? I’m fabricating everything myself, which is why it’s a royal pain in the ass
![]() 08/16/2016 at 23:41 |
|
Under the hood? Not really any room. Miata engine bays are cramped as hell. I don’t have the money to make “through the hood” look presentable right now, either, and I’m a bit wary of chopping holes in my damn car.
![]() 08/16/2016 at 23:42 |

Lol. I found your previous posts a few minutes ago. So is there room for the intercooler in front of the radiator?
![]() 08/16/2016 at 23:45 |
|
Yes, but only the intercooler, and there are reasons I shouldn’t do it. The IC I have been given has the inlet and outlet on the front face, which makes pipe routing for most sane configurations impossible, and I don’t want to do a front-mount because my marginal radiator needs all the unblocked airflow it can get. I’m trying to fiddle with things and make it work under the hood somehow, but that’s not looking terribly likely either.

Good luck. I’m likely going the fmii way. I figure I can balance the hours spent fucking around vs hours getting paid at work and make it a wash.

jealous of your money
![]() 08/17/2016 at 00:07 |

But I’m almost 40, fat and work 60 hours a week. It’s always a trade-off.
![]() 08/17/2016 at 00:13 |

I used to work 56 hours a week. I miss the paychecks. I make half of what I made then now :(
![]() 08/17/2016 at 00:16 |

That sucks. I actually miss the not being in a cube. But I’ll take salary.
![]() 08/17/2016 at 07:33 |

if your out of money and you had an old set hanging around you could take form that to mount the intercooler.
![]() 08/17/2016 at 08:05 |
|
I’m voting for flaring the fender and having the intercooler in the inevitable vent space, like a Corvette.
Anyway, what are you needing to get this done?
![]() 08/17/2016 at 08:08 |
|
That’s not the problem I’m having. Zipties will mount anything, but there’s no physical space in the engine bay for the pipes to route. I’ll have to run without an intercooler for now and eventually get a coolant reroute and run a Honda radiator side-by-side with an aluminum intercooler
![]() 08/17/2016 at 08:11 |
|
I was going to put it in the fenderwell, but there’s too many power steering and A/C lines in the way to get the damn intercooler piping down into the fenderwell. Looks like my only real bet is to ditch the full-width stock radiator and replace it with a half-sized Honda one, do a coolant reroute for better efficiency, then mount the intercooler side-by-side next to the rad. That’ll be roughly $430 in bullshit. Ugh.
![]() 08/17/2016 at 08:13 |
|
Ok, how much intercooling are you needing to do? any chance of doing a angled mount down low under the front belts and such? use the high pressure under the car to blow air through it? not the most efficient, but maybe good enough? I may not be explaining that well...
![]() 08/17/2016 at 09:08 |
|
I get what you’re saying, but that would be *awfully* low to the ground down there.
![]() 08/17/2016 at 10:28 |
|
I haven’t been under a Miata, otherwise I could probably engineer something in.
![]() 08/17/2016 at 10:37 |
|
My best bet is to find some really severe 90 degree bends and try to mount it flat just in front of the valve cover, then make a “ramp” just behind the radiator to deflect air up towards it and hope the hood clears the whole mess.
![]() 08/17/2016 at 12:05 |
|
No, mount it down low. Live dangerously with your custom turbo kit!
Speaking of, how about making it twin turbo? I have this garret t3/t4 hybrid sitting in my garage from a failed project...

oh lord
![]() 08/17/2016 at 12:22 |

Yeah? YEAH?!?!
![]() 08/17/2016 at 12:22 |

Although I guess that’s bi-turbo, rather than twin. Your car could be bi....turbo.
